The pictures are large and clear, the colors are wondrous. For each illumination a small detail is shown slightly magnified so that you can appreciate the brushwork. Most of the selections are French and many are by Jean Fouquet, a true maste|About the Author||Fanny Faÿ-Sallois is a historian and iconographer. Dominique Ponnau is the director of the Louvre School.|

Intended for private reading and meditation, these so-called "books of hours" were arranged, in keeping with the practice of the Church, so that particular prayers were read at specific times of the day.
