He is best known for his fantasy novels and fairy tales. MacDonald was a pioneer in the genre of fantasy literature. His works influenced such writers as J. R. R. Tolkien

It must first be understood that George MacDonald inspired such authors as J.R.R. Tolkien, W.H. Auden, Madeline L'Engle and E. Nesbit. C.S. Lewis regarded him as his master.
